13/04/2019  Southern Athletics League, St Ives  details
Despite cold conditions, Hunts AC got off to a cracking start in the first match of their 2019 Southern Athletics League campaign, finishing a hair's breadth behind Herts Phoenix (288.5 to 283).  Setting the tone in the first race contested by a Hunts AC athlete, Hannah Ridley took it out in the 800m, holding on to win in 2:24.0.  Hannah was ably backed up by Ella Blake who won the B string as she completed her first outdoor 800m race in almost two years, running 2:30.7.  The men also produced double winning efforts with Morgan Webster taking the A string 100m (11.4) and 200m (22.8), while 16-year-old Brandon Alves emulated Morgan in the B string races (11.9/25.1).   On the women's sprint side, Iona Newbegin was not to be outdone by the men as she not only comfortably won the 100m A race but also equalled the Under 17 Women and U20 Women club records with her 12.5 secs clocking.  Iona later teamed up with Janice Amber, Francesca Riley and Sarah Ridley as she anchored the 4x100m team to victory with 52.0 secs, the fastest at the club in eight years.  Janice, Sarah, Hannah Ridley and Francesca  also added the 4x400m win with 4:33.9.  Out in the field, Richard Fuller returned to pole vaulting after a gap of a couple of decades to win the A string with 2.60m while Joel Thomas took part in his first pole vault event, clearing 2.40m for the B string win.  Another A-B string double came from Ella Reed who won the A string triple jump with a personal best 10.13m with Jo Abel winning the B string also with a personal best. Her 9.54m distance is just 5 cms from the club veteran women's record.  In the throws, Sarah Ridley doubled up to win the A string shot putt (9.25m) and discus (28.58m).  Hunts AC is off to a strong start to the season and hopes to beat its best-ever placing in this league (7th).  Special thanks to Mike Hayball, Andy Phipps, Harriet Bruce, Charlotte Bruce, Keith Flint, Rach Waterworth, Sandra Acton, Sandra Pedley, Paula Waller, Krista Alves, Steve Wellman, and Thomas Bruce who organised and officiated this meet to perfection.
